Neutral Territory

Neutrals are soothing, sumptuous and seasonless...making them an ideal choice for the bedroom. In the winter they're cozy and inviting; in the summer they're a calm respite from the heat. Layered just right, neutral rooms are anything but boring! I happen to love neutral bedrooms that skew toward the masculine side. The ones that are un-perfect but finished, where your eye isn't necessarily drawn toward any one thing but registers the space as a complete, relaxing whole.

Take note of these tips to achieve a great neutral look in your own bedroom:

1. Use the tone-on-tone approach, incorporating a range of shades within the same color family:

2. Don't match...layerThe pieces in your room should look like they were accumulated from different places, at different times.

3. Texturize. Grasscloth wallpaper, mohair upholstery, fur throws, woven carpets...

4. Keep large furniture pieces solid. If you want to add pattern, do it with accessories:

6. Add art in a contrasting color. It seems counterintuitive, but adds depth and intrigue:

6. Mimic ceilings and floors to unify the space. The room will appear taller and larger:
