Southern Charm

For the past several months I have had the pleasure of visiting Aiken, South Carolina while designing a model home at The Reserve Club, a private golf and active lifestyle community located 20 miles from Augusta, GA. The home was showcased in Woodside Plantation's Festival of Homes this past weekend!

From the Steeplechase to Polo, Aiken is the epicenter of South Carolina's equine culture. After the Civil War, Aiken became a famous wintering spot -- known as "The Winter Colony" -- for wealthy Northerners such as the Vanderbilts and the Whitneys, who were lured to the area by the ideal climate for equestrian sports. Aiken provided a unique mosquito-free environment, pristine clay soil for horse farms, and expanses of land to build grand estates. Today, the legacy of the Winter Colony Era endures in Aiken's vibrant downtown area, beautiful southern homes and historical landmarks, and first-class equestrian sports.

Ten minute's drive from downtown is The Reserve Club, a gated community with award-winning golf courses, fine dining, nature trails, and state-of-the-art sports and wellness facilities.

My goal in designing the model home was to echo the Southern elegance of Aiken and The Reserve Club such that visitors could walk in the door and immediately envision themselves living comfortably in the home. While the design is more traditional than my typical NYC spaces, I love working in a variety of styles and have developed a deep appreciation for relaxed Southern decor. Here is a peek at some of my favorite details:
